Should I take selenium in the morning or at night?
I take selenium in the evening.
I usually take it for the last 20 minutes or so of my workout. I am thinking about taking it during the day too. Any opinions?
Take it in the morning if you want to test your blood plasma levels and/or if you are taking it to prevent hair loss. The studies are inconclusive as to whether it's better to take it before bed or right before working out. It's better than nothing, but if you want to make a long term decision, don't just randomly decide what time of day you take it.
Also, it's better to take it with food, but it doesn't seem to matter if you take it with or without food.
What is the best supplement for Hashimoto's disease?
In general, supplements work best when they work with the body to build the most effective detoxification pathways possible.
There are three main ways that we can build these detox pathways: a) the body can increase the activity of the internal enzymes in the liver and skin, the colon and other digestive organs, and b) they can increase the effectiveness of the internal cells in expelling toxins and other impurities. C) we can build the body's resistance toxic substances with a high number of vitamins and nutrients.
Supplementing for the purpose of protecting us against environmental toxins is very important, however, supplements can be harmful when they work to protect the body from only one source of toxin exposure. For example, if a person has a leaky gut and is exposed to environmental toxins, the supplement that protects the body from that particular toxin will never be as good as a supplement that also protects against environmental toxins. The same thing can happen if a person eats a lot of vegetables but gets no other sources of toxins from the environment or from exposure to people who do not use personal care products. In this case, there is little need to use a vitamin C or A-B complex or any other detoxifier, as none of these will help protect against the environmental toxins that may enter the body through the mouth and the skin.
The best way to detoxify the body from toxins is to eat fresh fruits and vegetables that are not sprayed with toxic pesticides and that are not genetically modified and grown in soil that is contaminated with heavy metals. Once those toxins are ingested, however, then it is time to take a look at the individual supplement needs of that person.
Hashimoto's disease vs. Autoimmune Thyroid Disease The major difference between Hashimoto's disease and autoimmune thyroid disease is that the body in Hashimoto's disease cannot create antibody called TPO-Abs in the bloodstream. The body cannot make its own antibody, and this type of autoantibody is called "self-antibody".
Autoimmune thyroid disease, in contrast, requires two other types of antibodies to be present in the blood. The first type is a T-cell, which is a white blood cell that carries genetic information from the body to other parts of the body. T-cells produce this information as they multiply and divide in the bloodstream. The second type of antibody is called Tg-Ab.
What is the best form of selenium to take?
Selenium is a micronutrient found in selenium.
If you have a healthy liver, your body will utilize it to generate the thyroid hormones T4 and T3 (for more info on how our bodies make hormones, click here).
It is said that the majority of the selenium we consume comes from eating fish and seafood. I don't think this is always true. In some countries, the daily recommended intake of selenium is as little as 0.1mcg per day, based on the average consumption of seafood and fish. But how do we know that all those mcg of selenium being consumed are bioavailable? That's a tough question because every person's digestive tract is different. This is why a good digestive enzyme supplement would make a lot of sense (in particular one with multiple enzyme activities like Bromelain). Without proper enzyme action, even if one had the highest level of selenium ever consumed, it wouldn't work as efficiently because the nutrients would not be properly delivered to where they are needed.
What form of selenium is best? Although fish is generally considered to be the best form, it's important to note that selenium comes in many forms (organic anions, organic cations, selenoamides, selenates, and selenide) and from many sources (clams, krill, shrimp, lobster, clams, cod, catfish, anchovies, oysters, and various sea vegetables). So just because selenium supplements usually contain only selenomethionine or selenium yeast doesn't mean that any specific form isn't beneficial (or potentially detrimental). And many people who take selenium by itself report no side effects, even at very high levels. The problem comes when selenium is combined with zinc. Most popular selenium-zinc combination supplements may contain selenium as selenomethionine and zinc as zinc methionine, which can actually cause GI problems when taken at higher than normal dosages due to the zinc combining and causing greater acidity (more on that here). Other popular ones combine sodium selenite with magnesium or copper, so make sure you're getting the other micronutrients with it as well.
Can selenium reverse Hashimoto's?
I have Hashimoto's and just finished a month on selenium.
What I noticed is that the symptoms of my thyroid (fatigue, weight gain, constipation, etc) did go away, but now it seems like my metabolism has slowed way down. I started out at a resting heart rate of 49 and it's now down to 42. I've always been pretty active and used to run all the time. This is not the case anymore. My stomach is a lot smaller and my bowel movements are way less frequent. I'm only having about 3-4 bowel movements per week. Should I be concerned?
For the past couple of years I had a bit of Hashimoto's but it wasn't severe. I was recently diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and that's all they could find. I am not as active as I once was. My heart rate is usually around 60. I'm not sure what this all means. I think it may be good though because my weight is only up 2 pounds since starting the medication. I have a great doctor who treats me as a whole person not a thyroid problem.
Hi, I also have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis and fibromyalgia. I also lost 30 pounds while on the selenium. In fact, I gained 7 pounds back once I started back on Armour and Synthroid.

What type of selenium is best for Hashimoto's?
Question by Tessa K.
: I'm currently on a low dose of selenium with thyroid medication, I was wondering which type is best for Hashimoto's? My endocrine doctor thinks that the organic kind is better. Answer by Cenzo F.: There are two things you are concerned about. The form and the quality of your selenium. Most cases of Hashimoto's and autoimmune disorders (including other thyroid and adrenal problems) are due to an overabundance of reactive oxygen species in the body. They do more harm than good. It is possible that the selenium you are on is helping balance that excess or doing good damage to one of the reactive oxygen species in your body. Organic forms of selenium tend to do less damage since they absorb in their own normal ratio. Selenium is a good for fighting free radicals but too much selenium can lead to negative health effects. Organic is definitely better for your health and most people prefer it.
As for what type, it seems there is not a consensus but some studies show the benefit of molybdenum as well. A balanced selenium-molybdenum blend may prove even better than the individual supplements taken separately. What do my blood work tests indicate? Question by linda f.: Hello All,,what is the answer to my blood tests, I am 48 and I do have hypo thyroid and have been told I am hypo all over, I have been taking 5mgs of levothyroxine for 3 years, now I want to stop taking it.i am scared to go off the pills cuz I really don't know if my thyroid levels will just take a turn for the worst, can someone give me an opinion please,Thankyou.
Your Endocrinologist can answer this question for you. However, there are many variables and it is a difficult question. I suggest that you go back to your Endocrinologist and discuss your concerns in person.

Should people with Hashimoto's take selenium?
I have Hashimoto's thyroiditis and I'm currently taking 25 mcg of Synthroid daily.
If I take it's possible to take Selenium along with this? Does anyone have any experience with this? I've been taking Vitamin D and getting 15-20 units a day, and I was wondering if this would effect the effectiveness of Selenium? Selenium is probably not the right supplement for you. The problem is that some of the supplements you need are potentially harmful for individuals with Hashimoto's, like Vitamin A (retinol). In your case, selenium seems to increase activity of the autoimmune disease process so the risk of side effects outweighs the benefits in your case.
The only thing you may be able to get from taking selenium is a very low dosage of vitamin E which has proven benefits for people with Hashimoto's. It won't make any difference in your thyroid function tests (TSH, T4, T3, etc.), but it will probably improve your skin condition and hair condition.
Selenium alone is considered "weak" and may not be helpful at all, because it does not have anti-inflammatory action; rather it's primarily pro-oxidant. But when taken in combination with vitamin E (the natural form of which has a very high activity as antioxidant) the pro-oxidant activity is limited due to its ability to transfer electrons from other redox enzymes to the one that needs oxidation, thus limiting the damage.
My thought is if you can't take either Vitamin A or retinol, then you might want to consider taking a selenium supplement that combines selenium with vitamin E. Then you'd have the advantage of being able to avoid taking the potential harmful supplement which is retinol.
Dr. Mark Hyman says the following in his video on YouTube about how the immune system works: Retinol is one of the major pro-oxidants. And this is especially true of immune cells. And when immune cells undergo too much oxidative stress, they go into apoptosis and die. And then you get immune suppression. And it's actually very similar to the way heart cells function.
So think of immune cells like heart cells. When they're exposed too much oxidative stress, they start doing things like die. And, as a result, you get immune suppression.
