How does VPN work on Windows Server?
You will need to enable Remote Desktop Services (RDS) on your Windows Server. You can do this via the Computer Management console, or you can just go to the Control Panel, and double-click on the Remote Desktop Services icon. I'm using Windows 10, so I went to Control Panel > System and Security > Administrative Tools > Remote Desktop Services. I double-clicked the icon for Remote Desktop Services. I'm going to let it reboot, because it does it in the background. (It takes a few minutes.) Once it's rebooted, go to the Server Manager, double-click on the RDS icon, and enter an admin username and password.
On the Connect to Server screen, we'll use the VPN server as our IP address. How can we use VPN from our Windows workstation? Let's open the File Explorer window. You can get to it by clicking the Start Menu and then selecting Accessories > File Explorer. On my home network, I use the ExpressVPN client. It's a relatively popular client, so I'm sure you'll find a good deal of information online about configuring it for use on a server. I just want to give you a couple examples that should get you started.
By default, ExpressVPN sets the connection to Connect when I start a VPN connection. This means that the server doesn't need to ask if you want to connect to it.
You might want to disable that option if you're connected to the VPN server but not using it, though.
Can Windows 10 be used as VPN server?

Replace "VPN profile name" with a name of your choice. You will also need to edit the firewall rule for the specific profile name you created. With the exception of the very early versions of Windows 8 and Windows 10, Windows only supports the use of software-based VPN software (which we'll call VPN client).
Windows Server supports both IPsec VPN and Layer 2 VPN (L2TP) VPN, but if you are not using a Microsoft branded VPN server, you won't have access to Windows Server supported VPN protocols. There are many free (also known as open source) VPN solutions available for Linux, Windows, and macOS that can be used to create a VPN server on the home network, while offering a wide range of features. You can configure your device so that you will be able to reach the private network by connecting via a public network (like a Wi-Fi network that is part of a coffee shop, restaurant, airport, or hotel).
