Is TunnelBear a Chrome extension?
) and you'll see that it's something called an ActiveX plug-in.
This happens on all PC browsers, not just Chrome. You can bypass this control by downloading Firefox with the "No-Ads" extension and then go to "Settings > Add-ons > Extensions", then select "No-Ads Firefox" and install it. That works but is slightly inconvenient because it involves using Firefox instead of Chrome, while the TunnelBear plug-in is an addition to Chrome that also works in Firefox, so what if you don't want to use Firefox? Here's how it works in Chrome. First install the TunnelBear Extension (I have the one you see at the top of this article, but it costs money and you get no guarantee of service) and then open it in the Chrome Store: it opens as an extension. Now, go to Settings then to Show advanced settings and then select Content settings. The second option here is Plug-ins and here is what to select.
Next, scroll down to the bottom of the page. I show it partially cut off here to make room for other options you may have, but it won't be cropped. You see a box near the bottom called Allowed Scripts. That is where you should leave it (click anywhere else and Chrome will add it to the box), or you can click on that box and it will give you a preview of exactly what scripts it allows to run on your machine. Again, this is because webpages are written in JavaScript, a programming language often used to track your computer usage so Google can better target their advertising services.
Next, you need to make sure "TunnelBear" is in that list as well. Now simply select TunnelBear from the list that pops up when you click the Apply.
How do I use VPN extensions in Chrome?
When I first got my Google Pixel 3, the answer to that question was easy: You download an extension like the TunnelBear extension from Chrome Web Store.
The app lets you connect your laptop or phone to a VPN server that's located in a different country and uses a different IP address, so that your device appears to be located in that country. The app then connects to that VPN server and allows you to access any web site or app that is not served by the servers in your home country.
That app works fine. But if you don't want to wait for the app to download each time you use it, you can also use Chrome's built-in VPN capability. To do this, you have to enable VPN in your Google settings. Then, click on the Settings icon in the top right corner of Chrome. There you'll see a box with the words VPN on. Click it, and you'll see a pop-up that tells you that a new VPN profile has been created. Click the Enable button. If you now start using the browser, Chrome will automatically connect to that VPN server whenever it's available and you try to access a web site or app that is not available to you at home.
How do I switch between VPN profiles? You can switch between VPN profiles by clicking on the gear icon that appears when you click on the Settings icon. (If you don't see the gear icon, click the Settings icon again.) You can switch between one or two VPN profiles by clicking on the pencil icon that appears on the top right corner of each profile. (The pencil icon changes according to whether you are connected to a VPN or not.)
I have to switch between VPN profiles often, how do I do it? To make switching between profiles easier, Google has added an option to the list of VPN profiles in Chrome. Just click on the pencil icon next to the profile that you want to use. A dialog box will open, showing you all the profiles currently configured in the browser. Select the profile you want to use, and click the Enable button to change to that profile.
