Can VPN bypass hotspot?
This article will describe how to bypass a captive WiFi network that is created and used as a hotspot by the wireless router.
It is possible to use WiFi as a VPN by changing the configuration and using client based encryption to create a tunnel to the outside network. There are many ways to do this.
When considering a Hotspot there are a few things you should look at first: Is the device locked? Can the connection be re-configured to connect to an other Wi-Fi network? If the answer to the above two questions is yes, then you can bypass the Wi-Fi hotspot. This article will describe how to bypass the hotspot without needing physical access to the device. Is the Hotspot Locked? You first need to check that the device is locked or not. This is achieved through settings the hotspot has, for example if the WPA2 Enterprise Password is "test123" you may want to know if the device is locked.
Checking if the device is locked in Android (Image credit: Android Central). On an iPhone it is a little harder, as its Wi-Fi is encrypted as per the 4G standard. In iOS however we can uncheck the "Require passcode to join networks" switch under settings. When the switch is off you can use the Wi-Fi hotspot like it was always used to, as shown in the above image. The Hotspot key may be hard to find if you don't know where it is on the device, but there are methods to find it. Here we will skip a few steps and refer to another article on how to find the Hotspot key.
Can the Connection be Re-Configured? If the Wi-Fi hotspot can be re-configured then you have found a solution to bypass the locked Hotspot. For this we have to change some of the networking settings as described below.
The first step is to disconnect from the hotspot (which you already did) before making changes. Android/iPhone Settings. Go to Settings > Networks and Connections > Wi-Fi Settings > Wi-Fi Hotspot and click on the "Disconnect" button next to the hotspot name.
Why can't i connect to VPN using mobile hotspot?
When I use mobile hotspot to connect to VPN at work, it works just fine.
When I'm home or out of the office, it does not. It's been fine for a long time, but suddenly started acting up. This morning, it just said "error: Could not connect to VPN" and has been like this ever since. I tried resetting it, and it worked for about 10 minutes, and then reverted back to the same error message. What can I do?
It's not something that happens every time, just today. I have a MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012) running High Sierra. It is using the Sierra-Mozilla Network Extension VPN app. I used both the OpenVPN and WireGuard VPNs.
It's not my home connection, so it shouldn't be any more than a standard firewall or router problem. There is also nothing in the logs at the device level that I can see.
I have had this same issue, but on Yosemite. I solved it by turning off the hotspot altogether.
I am assuming that it may have something to do with the Network Extension. Perhaps there is some kind of timeout. Try disconnecting and reconnecting the network and see if that clears it up.
Good luck.
