Should VPN be on or off on laptop?
So my parents just upgraded their laptop so I can connect to wifi when I visit.
They already use a vpn over at work. At home I have a router that gives me a static ip and my mac can't get on through the vpn. The vpn has a dns name that forwards to my router so if I use it my laptop doesn't show that it is connected to the vpn.
Are all this options okay? Or will it cause problems later down the line? And should I turn on or off my local network adapter? If it wasn't on than I wouldn't be connected to the other networks but if it was on then my computer would be reachable from the outside? Thanks for any help. In most cases I would say just do without the VPN. You're just causing yourself problems. If you need it, get a vpn software package which will manage the settings for you, so you can stay off the VLAN and just have a vpn tunnel which is easy to setup and administer.
How do I disable VPN on Chrome?
I'm having some troubles with Chrome on a mac, and I have to use a VPN service.
It doesn't seem to work right with Chrome. I can't find the option to disable the VPN connection or anything. Is there a way to disable it?
As far as I know you can't turn off VPN on a mac. But if you're looking for a VPN client that works with iOS or Mac you can use. NordVPN. It's free and it has a client for Mac and Windows that will work with most VPN services and it also has an iOS app that will also work with most VPN services. You need to download the OpenVPN client and then point the browser to the URL.
How do I turn off VPN on my laptop?
I have a Lenovo Ideapad T450s, and I use the free version of Windows 10. I bought it in December 2025 and the computer had no problems until yesterday when the VPN settings disappeared. My home internet is through Virgin Media and it was set up using the Virgin Media app on my phone. After trying to connect for a few minutes, I noticed that my computer had started running really slow and so I turned off the VPN. When I connected to Virgin Media again, my Internet connection worked fine, but I can't connect to the internet using any other network. How can I get my computer back to normal?
Thanks for your help. Trey. Solution: Re-enable VPN. The instructions are here. You can also follow the instructions here. If you have an option to choose from the VPN connection, then you should be able to re-enable the VPN. If you do not have an option to choose from the VPN connection, then you can choose to manually connect to the VPN server. You will need to add a new connection manually, if you do not have an option to choose from the VPN connection.
Is it OK to disable VPN?
One of my computers running Windows 7 is connected to a VPN.
Since I have it set to automatically connect when I log on, I don't remember ever having to start it manually. I am concerned that maybe something is amiss with my settings.
Is it OK to disable the VPN when it is not needed? Would this cause any problems? Thanks. I was just trying to figure out if the connection settings were in the right place or if they had to be moved elsewhere. I think you're fine to disable the VPN if you're sure that's what you want to do.

@davidf you can always change it back again if you get into trouble. I would leave it disabled while you check for potential problems MasonJun 19 '11 at 17:27. 1
@davidf You can also manually disconnect via the Network and Sharing Center in Control Panel > Administrative Tools > View Network Connections (looks like what you're describing). JensJun 19 '11 at 18:00. 3 Answers.
For the most part, you shouldn't see any problems by doing so. In fact, some programs will have a dialog saying "you've disabled the firewall".
If you run into issues, though, the problem will most likely be that your VPN's settings are incorrect. If you want to check the settings, right click on the network icon on the taskbar and select Properties. Then, go to the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) settings and look for the VPN connection in the list. Click on it and make sure that it's set to automatic.
If it's not working correctly, I'd recommend changing your IP address to be static and then try connecting again. Also, you can use something like ipconfig /renew to update the IP settings on the computer, which will let you keep your IP for the time being. Thanks for the tips.
