Does muscle scraping help tendons?
I know that muscle scraping helps tendons heal.
It was recommended to me by my doctor, but I am wondering if it really does anything at all. I had a tendon tear that didn't heal, and it eventually tore again. I don't think there's any way of telling if it helped the first time around, since it didn't heal the second time.
Thanks for any information you can provide! Answer: I am no doctor, but I think it's pretty unlikely that muscle scraping does anything at all. Your doctor may have been referring to other forms of therapy, such as electrostimulation, or shockwave therapy.
These therapies use high energy shocks to stimulate the cells in the tendon to grow new tissue. Some tendons respond better than others, and these therapies can be quite painful. The reason that they're prescribed is that they can be very effective.
In your case, I'm not sure if electrostimulation would have been of any use. I know that some studies have shown that it can help with tendon tears, and there are some people who swear by it. However, I would still advise that you see a doctor who has experience with electrostimulation. He or she may be able to help you more.
I would not recommend shockwave therapy for a simple tendon tear. It's expensive, and I doubt it would have helped you.
I have had 3 torn tendon. I had a MRI done one of them and it showed a partial tear. It was not full and the tendon was still attached to the bone, so that made it a partial tear. It was not large enough to warrant surgery. I started PT with a physical therapist and were able to get the tear to heal. The tendon was not torn again. I did not do any scraping. It was not suggested by the PT and I just did what I could do. I would recommend you get a MRI. It will tell you how bad it is and what treatment you need.
Can you do scraping on yourself?
If you're anything like me, the answer to this question will sound something like this: I've been trying to do scraping on myself for years.
It's really fun, but sometimes I get all crazy and start peeling pieces off my body like people do with bandaids.
Here are the instructions for how to scrape on yourself: Go out into a public restroom where no one can look at you. Start by finding a place on your body where, by putting a scalpel to it, you would be happy to lose an entire limb. Wash all of your hair and put it in a blender. Mix a big batch of ice cream. As you are mixing it, keep your feet up off the floor and watch out for flying body parts.
Take a small piece of scrap iron and stick it on your bare butt cheeks. Run a blow dryer on your head until you burn your eyebrows off and start crying. Continue scraping with the knife until you fall asleep due to lack of blood circulation. (Yes, it can really happen!) Take your body outside to enjoy the sun and maybe some worms. If anyone asks, say that you're on meth. The skin just keeps growing like that. They won't know if you're telling the truth or lying. This is very likely the best way to deal with human waste.
We've all seen our share of commercials with some kid doing the whole tomboy/boy thing. They're probably too young to actually realize what's happening, or they are in fact still in their diapers, but the message is clear: You're either feminine or masculine. Boys and girls act either girly or boyish - they just need to decide which one to be, in order to fit in. In these commercials, the message goes beyond gender: Everyone needs to know whether they can or cannot be identified as heterosexual, and this isn't just about being identified as male or female. Heterosexuality has increasingly become the norm, but we still don't know how to identify it. What is it that defines a homosexual being?
How painful is muscle scraping?
By the time a doctor gets involved in your treatment, you've already taken weeks of pain medications to try to numb your pain, and you have probably had a number of procedures.
One of the most common ones is a muscle scraping or biopsy. But even the simplest of these procedures can be uncomfortable. How painful are they?
I always ask patients about pain on their initial visit to the office. This helps me quickly determine if I'm going to do anything serious or if they're going to need my help at all.
A simple office visit may last only a few minutes, but the doctor has to insert a needle into your muscle and remove a small piece of tissue. The most common method for doing this is by injecting local anesthesia directly into the muscle. You will feel a prick, then the doctor will insert the needle. The doctor usually can tell by the way your muscle contracts that the muscle is under anesthesia.
The scraping of the muscle is usually the next step. Again, the doctor will inject more local anesthesia and will pull on the muscle to gently get the tissue to come out. A quick visual inspection will help determine whether the muscle was scraped completely free of any adhesions (tissue sticking to another part of the body). If it was scraped free, there's no reason to do more.
Sometimes, the doctor will take a second biopsy meaning taking multiple small pieces of muscle tissue. Then, the doctor will look at the samples under the microscope to see how many cells the muscle contains, and to determine whether the muscle tissue is healthy or if there is muscle disease.
If the doctor doesn't scrape the muscle and removes a tiny sample, then this procedure is much less painful. You will not feel anything; your pain medication will be very effective, and you won't need local anesthesia.
A biopsy, or scraping of the muscle, will usually start the treatment plan. There are no studies on the amount of pain after a simple muscle biopsy because it's never been formally studied. But if you have an early stage muscular dystrophy, then the average patient might have a mild bit of discomfort.
Many of the biopsies in children are done under general anesthesia, and then there's no pain. The child will be sedated and the tissue taken.
