What is the best DNS for my location?
First of all, you have a problem.
Because of the way they were made, DNS queries that come from anywhere but inside an organization's network will always resolve to your default gateway. If you have a DNS server at your organization's default gateway, that should solve the issue.
If that isn't the case, then you need to ask your DNS server admin to change the default gateway in his or her system to point to something else. For the record, I have yet to have a DNS server work perfectly in my environment, and our internal DNS isn't configured in an unusual way.
Is 1.1.1.1 still fastest DNS?
We have a new server with dual quad core xeons.
The first task was to move our dns to the new server. After moving our dns to the new server, I checked out some DNS speed tests on the internet, and all the results were that 1.1 was still the fastest DNS. Our new server is running Centos 5.5 with the latest kernel and the latest version of dnsmasq. All of our other dns servers are on the same server and running the same dnsmasq. My question is, is 1.1 still the fastest DNS, or am I missing something? I'd be happy to try anything anyone could suggest.
We've got a small network here. We have a DNS server, a web server, and a mail server. The web server (Apache) has been running for about 10 years and 1.1 has always been the fastest for us.
I've had a few different DNS servers running on different machines over the years. When I started using Linux I was a big fan of PowerDNS. It was the fastest, but it didn't work very well with certain configurations. I then switched to BIND and it was a bit faster, but not that much faster. Over the past year I've been using PowerDNS again, but with the new release they're now supporting IPv6. I haven't done any speed testing yet, but I expect they'll be faster than BIND.
So what's the best way to measure DNS speed? First I'd say to do some online DNS speed tests. I've also done speed tests with my network. My first thought is to run an open TCP socket from a machine on the local network to a machine on the remote network, then see how long it takes to connect. I've also tried a ping test where I send a ping to a name, and measure the time it takes to get a response. The ping test can be a little misleading, but in general it's fairly accurate. You want to pick the lowest number you can get away with.
For both tests I don't really worry about the type of request (A, AAAA, CNAME, etc.
Which is better, 1.1.1.1 or 8.8 8.8 for gaming?
I had one host with 1.
1 on my home lan with 4k, and my gaming was excellent. Now I've moved to a new host that is an 8.8, what do I do?
If you are using the same ISP, try an IP from a different block for gaming purposes. Quote: Originally Posted by nfdwizn. I will still be on Comcast, and they have 1.1 and 8.8, so will need to choose which one.
I've been playing WoW on 1.1 with no problems and it works as fast as on my old server. I just get no connection when I go to play on 8. I have to restart my router to connect.
1 is good and is my favorite but 8.8 is not bad either but it seems to be slower in my experience.
I'm playing on a 1.1 IP.
And it's slow, at times, and also disconnects, and has disconnects, like I'm doing something wrong. I know there is something wrong with my router or the cable. But I don't know how to find out what.
My router says it's the "Cable Connection", and it has to do with the cable. The cable is a D-Link DIR-600. I'm also having problems with my D-Link DIR-600 Router, especially with the wireless internet. It disconnects, and it won't connect, and it disconnects and won't connect.
