How do you check if a proxy is up?

What proxy is free?

I have a proxy I use that I trust.

I like to check back on it every once in a while and see what is new and interesting. I haven't done that in years and my proxy list is a bit dated, so I thought I'd share what I found. Of course, you need to figure out which proxy server actually works for your network of computers. So here is my best guess:

I don't have a problem with any of the options, but of course if I do, someone will jump up and tell me I'm stupid, and they will be correct, and no one ever changes their mind after someone is right and they are wrong. But, my experience is that as long as you can pick and choose from the options available, you're good to go. A lot of these don't even require the user to set the proxy settings. You can use that autoproxy feature of all browsers now.

A few notes: I didn't find a free option at this point, but I didn't look very hard. If I did find one, it didn't work for me and I went with something else. This is a list of the ones that I do know about and have used.

These use the Internet Explorer proxy settings, so I think if you set them as it will work for everything. Note that there may be an option to select other type of connections and such, but for me that didn't matter much.

Many of these won't even need a proxy on your network. I think this is because some of these (including mine) use HTTP tunnels, which allow you to reach the internet through your local network, as long as the destination URL is local to your system, and not on the internet. It's a great idea when you're trying to download things from a site that is on the internet, but in a different country. It's easy to enable that kind of functionality.

I'm not sure if these will work on Vista or not. There is nothing on the first page of Internet Explorer Proxy Settings about them.

I started at the top and went down the list.

Are there any good free proxies?

However, you can make some money through ads on the free proxies, but that's not as easy or as good as selling paid proxies and then using those profit to buy another set of free proxies.
