Why are my camellias not opening?

How do you get camellia buds to open?

The camellia buds usually get open all at once.

It all depends upon when you plant the flowers. Some will bud and flower within a few days. Some may need a few weeks for the buds to get ready, but they usually get ready all at once. In order to help speed up the process, it is helpful to make sure that your planting medium is well-rotted and somewhat warm in the spring (this helps moisture get pulled from the ground and into the roots of the camellia bush, where it's needed most).

How are the buds removed from the tree? First of all, the blossoms must be pollinated. Some years it's easy, but other years it takes a little coaxing. The blooms need to be hand-pollinated or, better yet, gently shaken. (When the buds are already starting to "pop" out of their calyxes, you can usually shake them gently while the blooms are at a more exposed stage. If the buds are already fully detached from the tree, they should be gently shaken at a 45 angle, away from you and out to one side.

Once the flowers have been pollinated and the petals started to wither, it's time to pick. There are various tools to do this. A pair of pruners are best, or maybe it's easier with an electric hedge shear.

After the buds have been gathered, tie them down. For this purpose, thin bamboo fencing works very well. (This tool is especially helpful if you use the bamboo fencing to make your garden fences as well.) Tie each bud into the bamboo with green garden twine. When that is done, fill in the holes or gaps between the individual petals. This is done so the buds will stay in the right place, which allows a clear view of the flowers as they're growing.

It might be advisable to water the entire area to keep the buds moist until they open. This is usually not necessary, but a garden hose can't hurt! And it's finally time to watch your flowers grow and bloom. How do the buds look? Have they opened all at once? Have they stayed tightly closed?

Why are my camellia buds dying?

My plant camellias are doing ok now, it was about a month ago that I sprayed them with water or so because of leaves got cramp from rain storm which had about 5 degrees in temperature.

After few days since the temp was lower then zero.

A friend gave me some info he is a big gardner and has very many years of experience, he said this is not a problem but I must do a spray for aphids in 2 or 3 days, at day 4, there is no spray and then at day 5 the aphids will move on to next camellia, just for you information, so this is happened. I have no sprays for now and I can't do a spray because there is still rain, maybe I can spray only in morning.

Do you have any more info? Is this an issue of time, is my plant old and need a long time to recover and so on? He also said if I don't spray again then all plants in the area will die. Re: Are my camellia buds dying? Hi

From what I am seeing is that when it is cold enough your camellia will close up. It helps them when it gets colder weather that they have protection from the cold wind. The cold is to make them harden better, or better be able to grow bigger flowers. When you notice that their flower buds do not show anymore but not too late. You must wait until there are almost no buds left and then you can give them a spray. If I remember correctly I have heard some one say they have been spraying at 8 degrees.

I remember my mother spraying my roses (which have not come out yet.) I saw one day and there was no buds around to have them sprayed. It might not be the case here, as we have got cold temps lately but you will know for sure after another couple of days when you see if they have sprouted or not.

I think the best thing you can do is to watch them closely and at least go by the weather reports and see if the temperature is still too high. You can also do something called a pre-winter prune, which I am not going into as I don't want to bore you all.
