How big does a camellia grow?
A camellia grows quite large.
If you are buying a seedling camellia, it should reach about 2 feet tall and 3 feet wide. Small-leaved Japanese camellias grow much taller than their larger-leaved English cousins.
How old is my camellia in bloom? When camellias flower they start to drop petals. You don't want to pick these petals, as they deteriorate quickly and may be ruined. The best time to take these blooms is about two weeks before your plant's spring flowering. Before then the petals won't dry out and can be kept with other flower pieces such as cattleyas.
Can I graft my own camellia to grow bigger or shape-able flowers? Yes. You should get your leaves cut or your rootstock cloned in order to grow even more stems and flowers. A new cloned rootstock will take 3 to 4 years to develop into a large enough plant for its mature size.
Why does my camellia flower after the foliage has withered away? Some older roots from old-fashioned species such as "A" and "B" will develop into large, thick rosettes called callus. Sometimes, when there are two plants in a vase, the plant can sprout a new flowering stem from this thicker rosette. Many gardeners like this look and flower later than if they were growing healthy leaves directly from the cutting.
What do I do when I lose some of the camellia's lower leaves? When you find that your plant has lost a leaf or several leaves, it's time for maintenance. Grafting was mentioned above, but cutting the plant's bottom stems back every year or so will increase bud production. Also remove the lower foliage and allow new leaves to grow out, pruning new leaves off until you find something big enough to keep them growing. It's also time to water your camellia and it looks prettier as it loses more and more leaves, turning yellow.
What do I do when I don't have room for my camellia? It depends on how much room you have. First, you may be able to take some of the camellia's lower leaves.
How tall and wide does a common camellia get?
Does anyone know how tall and wide a common camellia will grow?
It is the only type of camellia I have ever seen in a nursery and would like to buy one for my apartment. If you had a mature camellia that had flowers all year, how tall would it be? And how wide? I don't know why you've never found it, but a friend gave me a large tree after she removed hers from her house. She called it a "common" and had two of them. They are on the "tall" side of things.
How tall and wide a common camellia will grow? I live in So. Cal. We grow them as trees and they can get up to around 75 ft. The largest we have is at least that tall. It is just beautiful. But yes if it gets bigger than that then you can transplant it.
If you have no issues with the potting soil and they can get big you can get anywhere up to 75-80 feet. I think 75 is the average, my garden has got 2 that are at least that tall and a few that are closer to 45-50 feet. The biggest ones, however, can get closer to 100 feet or more.
A friend gave me a large tree after she removed hers from her house. I had a couple that were about the same size as that one. They looked great even when there was no flower display. But I had them about 30 years ago, so don't know for sure if they were ever blooming.
I've also heard that they can reach heights of 80ft+
Are camellias fast or slow growing?
I have a 12" container of 2' tall camellias.
They were brought to me at my nursery 3 months ago and they are now getting to about 4" in diameter. I was told that they were very fast growing and am wondering if the same is true for camellias. I also have a small container of 2' tall flowering shrubs (fringed leaves) which were purchased from the same nursery and they are almost 6" in diameter. The container was purchased a year ago and it is still in the same pot. Does anyone know if these shrubs are also fast growers? I can't find any information on the net. Thanks.
Re: Camellia fast or slow growing? I don't know for sure but the camellias are usually bigger than the other stuff in the same pot. They could be fast growing because you haven't had them long enough, you could be feeding them too much (they are the most difficult plant to grow in a pot because they require lots of fertilizer), or you may be watering them too much. It's hard to say without more information.
The size of a shrub is a function of its genetics, size of roots and top growth rate. My shrubs are about 1/2 years old and are already 2 feet tall and look like they'll be 3 feet by the end of the summer. I grow them in a 6 inch pot, no feeder, and water them once a week (if I forget, they're in my room, not the greenhouse, so I tend to forget.)
If you're growing in a pot where the roots are at least as large as the pot, they shouldn't grow as much as a tree does in a larger pot. Even if they look like they're in a pot of 10 gallons, you should be able to see that the pot's diameter is less than the roots.
They could be fast growing because you haven't had them long enough, you could be feeding them too much (they are the most difficult plant to grow in a pot because they require lots of fertilizer), or you may be watering them too much. I thought about that but my other plants are just as fast growing.
How long do camellias take to grow to full height?

Answer: They grow very quickly, usually one year. They have a strong root system and you can tell how long it's been planted by digging down deep in the soil. You will be amazed. I have a plant that was four feet tall when we planted it in spring of 2024. It was still flowering in fall of 2024, but we just couldn't take cuttings anymore. I'll cut off the current season's bloom and give you a picture of the root system. As long as the root systems are vigorous, the chances of them dying aren't too great. I had a good season, but there were other good years with dry summers. The same is true for shrub roses - sometimes you get nothing in some years. But if you plant them where they have shelter from hot weather, they will usually fare well and you should get plenty of flower production. Good luck!
