Is Gmail SMTP port 465 or 587?

What is the incoming mail server for my Gmail account?

If your Gmail account is associated with a corporate, organization or university e-mail account, the incoming mail server is the default server used to access the organization's e-mail.

This information is set at the time you configure the account, and it is stored as part of your Gmail account. You can find this information by clicking on the Settings icon in the upper right-hand corner of the Gmail interface, then click on the Gear icon.

What is the outgoing mail server for my Gmail account? When you send an e-mail from your Gmail account, you have the option to send the e-mail from any of the listed servers. The server you choose will determine what server your e-mail is sent from. In most cases, the default server for sending e-mail is "smtp.googlemail." Your outgoing e-mail server is controlled by your Internet service provider. You can change the outgoing mail server for your account by logging into Gmail and clicking on the Settings icon in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. Then click on the Edit button next to "Account settings" and select "Outgoing Mail Server." You will be prompted to choose a new server. If you are having trouble selecting a new server, you may want to contact your Internet service provider.

Is Gmail SMTP port 465 or 587?

A new user to Gmail has asked if the gmail server uses port 587 or 465 for its SMTP server.

We have a web app with an SMTP client that needs to connect to gmail. The app does not use SSL. Since the app is not secured we are concerned that gmail has switched to port 587 and may no longer accept SMTP connections from gmail accounts that use port 465? Does anyone know what to expect in regards to port 587 security for incoming connections?

Also, our webapp uses SSL where available, but not necessarily on I'm assuming port 443 is good to be used, or is port 465 good enough if SSL is not used? Gmail has moved to port 587 (which is now the default) and as such can't take any old gmail account. You should be using port 587 and I believe you should also use SSL with your gmail account (though this isn't actually enforced at this time. See link below).

In the case of SSL - since SSL doesn't work via plaintext connections (unlike, say, POP3) - there isn't much you need to check for. With SSL, any encryption on the port will be applied on your local end, so you needn't worry about the mail leaving your system being encrypted.

The only real thing to look for is that SSL can often cause problems with Windows systems - which, in return, can cause problems with Microsoft Exchange, etc. If you plan on using SSL in the future (ie your system has been "fixed"), you'll need to look into that (or use a different IMAP client for example).

You could also try contacting your ISP - some are okay with it, others don't. I know that some ISPs won't allow you to set up port 587 and thus not allow you to connect without SSL. Check that your ISP allows gmail port 587, or see if they support anything else.

If you're using SSL anyway, then it won't matter. Just make sure that SSL works on the port - as you found out! If the port is wrong, it's not the email server's fault but yours.
