Can Tor Browser be tracked?
This isn't a question you can ask without someone getting all offended that you are questioning their privacy.
Let's start by explaining how the internet works and how it provides anonymity to users, while at the same time hiding it from ISPs, cyber criminals, web censors and even the companies that are listening in on our communications online. It uses onion routers which encrypt information as it flows through them.
At first glance you would think that any browser like Tor Browser would be more insecure than the standard browser you use, since everything is hidden (though this is starting to change and you will be hearing about it from the people who make things like the Firefox Quantum browser) so how can Tor Browser provide more privacy? Well, it's easy to get information about a site that you are visiting once you know where it came from. This is where VPN or Internet Leakage comes into play: if one of your devices is using one of those services instead of the standard browser then all of your Internet connection passes through a different network connection. So no cookies, HTTP requests, images etc. Will be recorded for that duration as this data is not sent from the site. So if we're trying to get information from Google we need to see it. It's also possible to do this to any ISP but as they do get to see the traffic this makes it impractical. There are also ways to record Internet traffic using wireless routers although most of the common ones today block these. In an age of always increasing surveillance by big corporations, it's very common for such businesses to have internal ways of gathering this information. Companies like Facebook have had a massive deal of problems over the past few years and for good reason. They have become so obsessed with tracking users online that anything could go wrong because the user just doesn't care anymore. In this story I'll try to shed some light on how the people behind Tor are getting away with it today. Let's start from the beginning and see if you can identify what we're seeing in the diagram at the bottom.
