I've been playing with an OpenVPN client and server for a couple of weeks now, and I'm starting to think that it's time to write up some notes.

I'm looking for a little direction on this one, however.

The documentation on OpenVPN says that "OpenVPN can create and use SCTP streams for secure tunneling". It's not clear whether this means it can create and use SSLv2 streams or not. So the first question is: Does OpenVPN support SSLv2?

If so, is it possible to create an OpenVPN server with SSLv2, and then use that to establish a secure connection to an OpenVPN client that uses SSLv3? Or is SSLv2 and OpenVPN incompatible in any way? Thanks! Openvpn uses sctp in version 2.0+1 from openssl-dev.

Hi all, I'm currently running OpenVPN from inside an OpenBSD 5.3 installation, and using it to provide secure (HTTPS) access to a remote server. This is working very well, but I'd like to move it into a real Linux distribution (Ubuntu 9.04) to see how well it runs on that platform.

I've installed the OpenVPN package (using the ubuntu-keyring repository), and configured the server. However, the client installation tells me that it cannot find the server.

My server setup is as follows: eth0: 172.16.1 (with a static address)
eth1: 172.

You don't need to buy a license for the application, as long as your company is based in Canada or elsewhere. The software consists of 1 open-source licensed product that can be downloaded from the OpenVPN website or another host. There are both Windows and Linux OpenVPN clients available for download.

There is only one limitation when it comes to the number of computers on the network. It depends on how many concurrent sessions the server has on a single IP address, so you may not necessarily be able to additional machines to the network simply because of the way that the system handles concurrent sessions.

But keep in mind that as the number of computers on the server increases, more bandwidth will be consumed, thus you should be mindful of the fact that it will also increase the amount of time it takes to establish a connection. In case there are no available servers, it is important to understand that there is an option to use multiple servers at once, meaning that a client will connect to any one of them until a server becomes available. After which a new connection will be established to another available server.

Is OpenVPN server free? No! When it comes to paid OpenVPN servers, you should expect certain restrictions. This is not a surprising turn of events, given the nature of the service and pricing model. In order to establish a secure network that connects a client to another client, server, or ISP, it will take some effort, especially if you wish to connect with multiple clients simultaneously.

There is some good news, though. Even though there are costs involved, you can easily get a monthly plan and pay as much as you want for specific servers and connections you want to establish. The only thing you have to be mindful of is that you will only have one month in which to complete these services.

When it comes to the quality of a server's software and its features, though, the prices for unlimited servers with multiple connections will be significantly higher than those for those with low limits. However, what would be ideal is to find multiple providers in order to access their servers at the same time.

Does OpenVPN use SSL or TLS?

OpenVPN uses TLS in order to provide mutual authentication between the server and the client.

This is done by having the server's certificate included in the negotiation (a "CommonName" in the CertificateRequest protocol extension) and the server verifying that it has indeed been sent by the client. At the heart of this are the certificates which specify whether the server may be trusted or not.

The following table shows the various options available for the TLS layer. The TLS Server Certificates column shows whether a specific certificate has been accepted. In our OpenVPN software it is used to indicate that the server certificate has been validated and may be trusted by the client. It is possible to use a common name instead of a certificate, but this would not be supported by the OpenVPN software.

The TLS Client Certificates column specifies the TLS cipher suites that have been negotiated for the session. TLS clients and servers are required to support any cipher suite listed in the "Default Suite" column (and optional TLS versions indicated).

Note that there are some situations where a Common Name is more appropriate than a certificate. In particular it is more useful when the server has a certificate chain and only one Common Name (eg, an "*example.org" wildcard certificate).
