What is the best time of year to plant camellias?
I have a camellia planted in the sun for about a year, and it is flowering now.
What should I do to keep it healthy? It looks like it is just fine, but I worry about losing any leaves. Should I repot it or what can I do to make it more sturdy and keep it healthy?
Also, it has been blooming in the spring, but it seems to have died back for the summer, as if it has run out of energy. I would like to encourage it to bloom again in the fall.
The best time to plant camellias is when you get some fresh water on them. If the soil is too dry the roots will die. Some people think they don't need to water. This is not true. I used to be a member of this club, but I have moved away from it. They are very easy to grow, but they need to be in the sun for at least 6-8 hours a day. The biggest problem is that they don't like being transplanted. They need to be transplanted in the spring. You can try to use a strong root stimulator like a root stimulator. You can also put a layer of pea gravel on top of the soil. You can try and fertilize it with a little bit of fertilizer. Another trick to keep your camellia healthy is to spray it with a neem oil spray. It is going to be very expensive. I have had luck with it, but it is a very expensive thing to buy. This is the best camellia that I have ever grown. I don't know what kind it is. The soil is a little bit acidic. The soil pH is about 6.5-6. If you water your camellia regularly, it will grow. The trick is that you have to water them. You can also prune them. If you prune them they will not die.
Do camellias like sun or shade?
I've never found out.
In its prime, a camellia flower is spectacular: each petal as long as a finger. I'd seen that flower on the Internet and on camellia cuttings books but had never had a chance to see it in the flesh. A whole world of difference from the average orchid. My first job was to get a suitable camellia in bloom, and not just any ordinary one. I needed the right colour - pink, white or red - the right shape - drooping, arching or nodding - and the right size. I needed to see what camellias looked like all together, all at the same time. If they were on a big show tree, I couldn't just wander along like a tourist and take in every detail.
It took a while for me to find one that met all the conditions. You have to keep on and on at the nurseries until you eventually find the right one. It's a bit like the search for Mr Right. One day you're happy with an attractive bloke, but he's not quite what you want; the next day you're looking at a really handsome man who doesn't quite fit your taste. You keep searching and browsing, trying different men on for size, until you eventually find the right one. I was feeling just like that, I'm sure. After a lot of browsing, I got a little excited. Surely now I'd found the perfect one, I'd be able to relax. But I needed to wait until my camellia had flowered.
This was not only tricky to do; it was also more expensive than I'd anticipated. I had planned to get a dozen trees in September, so they could bloom in November or December and flower in March. It was only after I'd been disappointed with this one - it had failed to bloom at all - that I realised that the time I'd chosen for them to be in flower was the wrong time of year. Now I had to start all over again, with new trees. I got them in April. I think some trees need a good deal more time to make flowers than others. The camellia I'd picked as my perfect one would have to wait until May. I'd wanted her for Christmas; instead I would have her for New Year's Eve.
Finally, in February, everything was ready.
How tall and wide does a camellia grow?
In March 2025 I planted two Camellia Japonica 'Pink Beauty' Camellia seeds. In April my friend planted her Camellia sinensis 'Shoveler' Camellia seed at about 4 inches. At the moment the camellia is starting to blossom.
When will the flower buds appear? Does anyone know if they will open? If anyone could give me an idea of the width of the branches and trunk when the buds first appear on the camellia it would be useful. I know how tall a camellia grows (1.8m), but not how wide.
Thanks. Hello from UK! The flower buds on your 'Pink Beauty' are very late, but 'Shoveler' opened last week at 8 inches diameter and was much earlier. Your blooms should have peaked by now. You can see more photos on the Camellia Forum here: If you can post pictures of your buds at flower peak, we might be able to identify them
Hi again all. I am happy to say I went and put my flower buds under my hand lens and my eyes are still intact after all these years! One question I have is what kind of size to I should give it. Do you use a measuring tape or do you use the old school method and put them at the top of your head? Is there anything I could give to my mum to use to go with me and try and identify the buds.
Thankyou. I think all measurements should use the lower edge of the bud as this is most important for identifying it and is always the only way a gardener will be able to tell the age and health of their bonsai trees and plants. We get the branches measured like that and we can look forward to seeing the full tree in 18 months. It's also good advice to measure at the top of the bud where it sits on the branch. A large bud is very unlikely to flower early and a small bud is probably not worth worrying about. A nice looking plant is a great way to judge growth and health. It doesn't sound like yours looks like it has had much growth since your other camellia bloomed.
What is the spread and height of azaleas?
I live in the Ozarks of AR and can't find answer. Thanks
I'm new to this forum but have grown azaleas for decades. They can be very fragile, so please be patient with them. I started with an azalea named Blue Jay that was planted around 1995-1996. The roots were well established, but the lower branches grew into the soil. It was about 20' tall when I left Arkansas for Missouri.e. It was a very tall, healthy looking plant.
In 2025, we took it out of our ground nursery container and transplanted it into a 5 gallon pot. When it grew to about 10' tall, we transplanted it into a 6' container. It flowered and was beautiful, then a few years ago, it began to die. The growth wasn't good, there were many dead branches on top and roots growing in at a slow rate. The lower branch growth had stopped entirely. The roots were well established into the soil.
After reading about azaleas, and researching on the internet and in books, I didn't do much to improve its situation. I gave it a good haircut, then I planted it in the back of my yard in the shade of some larger trees. It grew slowly, about a foot a year. I didn't expect a miracle, I just wanted to provide it with some shade.
Recently, I had to trim it off because it grew over onto my neighbor's property. After that incident, it grew no faster, but was just as beautiful as before. I don't need it any taller or larger than what it was already. About 10 feet.
Last year, it did nothing. So I decided that if it wouldn't grow, I'd use it as a wind block. If it continued to grow slowly, I could put it into a pot next spring. But by the end of last winter, the branches were dying and the tree had stopped producing flowers. The leaves were turning yellow and dead leaves were all over the ground. The trunk was also showing stress. The trunk looked like it was just holding the tree up. It was a good plant but it couldn't thrive.
It has been a couple of months since I took it out. I have now put it in a 2 gallon pot, but it is still small. It's 6" wide and not quite as tall as the previous container.
