How do I connect to OpenVPN for free?
The first step is to set up your account.
This will require the following: An email address. A password. A phone number so we can validate the number and contact you when needed. It's also best if you can provide some information in the application such as: The country where you are connecting from. The phone that you use on OpenVPN's side. The username of the user you are trying to connect to. If you need help on how to login, read our login guide. The next step is to select a location. We have over 30 regions around the globe. Our region is currently Europe but you can select any other. You can change later by logging into your account and going to My Settings
On your home network, we want to share the connection via NAT (PAT doesn't work) so there are a few more steps you need to be aware of. We will show you how to configure NAT forwarding.
We recommend enabling port forwarding for all ports in TCP and UDP. The default port forwardings can be found in port forward configuration.
The reason we do this is because port forwarding is necessary to connect to other VPN providers. We won't cover the process to connect to another VPN. This is a guide to connect to OpenVPN itself
NAT forward (port forwarding). To share the openvpn port the correct way, is to enable the forwarded ports in your router. To be safe, open up a second router (router 1) next to your router in both directions. Connect them using their static IP's as shown below.
On your router configuration page, find your router's NAT port forwarding settings in Port forwarding. Enter the range here shown in bold, not the openvpn port. This will forward traffic to openvpn ports to your public IP/LAN IP
The second port that opens are used to control the VPN client so make sure to leave this one open. The port used for control on the router has been shown in bold on your router page Your LAN IP should also be left active after this process and it should be connected to your LAN IP. The DNS is then controlled on your router.
For more information about port forwarding on these devices visit the following page.
Is OpenVPN free or paid?
There are a few choices of OpenVPN software to install on your router.
Do you need the open source version, which is totally free? Do you need a paid for commercial program, which is more secure but also more expensive? Some of the OpenVPN settings will be similar, some will be different.
How does OpenVPN work? OpenVPN works by encrypting your network traffic. This means that it will encrypt your information before it gets on your ISP's connection. Once on your ISP's network, this encrypted information is passed through the ISPs connections so that the data is ready for delivery when you connect to the OpenVPN server.
It is important that OpenVPN does not encrypt everything. You may choose to have information like your login details, or web browsing history passed through the connection. This is because if the data is encrypted, then it can't be read.
This encryption technology allows for a VPN connection which is not connected to a central server (although you can connect from the central server). The advantage of this is that the only people who can decrypt your traffic and read your information are the VPN server and those with whom you specifically allow them access.
How do I start using OpenVPN? The first thing you need to do is to configure the router. The router has to be configured so that it is able to use an external IP address. OpenVPN has two types of configuration; manual and automatic.
Automatic. If you configure OpenVPN automatically, then the OpenVPN program does the configuration and you do not have to enter any additional settings. To begin, OpenVPN runs once the router has booted. If the router is not connected to the internet, then this won't happen. If the router is connected to the internet, then you can set the time limit for the program to run before going online.
After configuring the program, the router will ask you to configure the OpenVPN settings. These are shown in the image below: Setting up OpenVPN automatic. Manual. If you have set OpenVPN to run as a manual, then you must set all the OpenVPN settings manually. You can find out more about these settings in the following sections.
You will see that after you have entered your credentials the router will ask you to set the port forwarding settings for the OpenVPN server.
