What are the risks of letting someone use your hotspot?
I have a Macbook Air and have recently started using a Samsung T660 as a hotspot.
The only problem is that I don't know how much money I am going to make, but I am not going to let anyone use my hotspot and I don't want to lose out on the potential. How can I know how much money I am going to make if people are going to be using my hotspot?
The risks of letting someone use your hotspot is nothing more than you letting them access your wireless network. If they get access to your network, they could try to hack into your laptop, try to upload all of your personal data or get all kinds of bad things done. You might have to accept those risks if you are okay with sharing your network and giving them access.
If they are going to be using your hotspot and you will not be allowing them access to your network, you should have no problem letting them use your hotspot for this limited period of time. How to find out how much you could possibly be making? I would suggest doing the following: Log into your free hotspot account on Tiscali.e. This will tell you how many people are currently logged in and how much money they have used to date.
Log in to your mobile phone provider website. Find your provider and go to the Mobile web page. In that page, there should be a section where you can see how much data you have used and how much you are charged for it.
I don't think that the question you posed should be closed. It's not really a 'noob' question, since it seems pretty simple. And there are certainly valid reasons to ask this question, so I've voted to reopen.

Can someone hack my phone from a hotspot?
Hey all, I recently purchased a Motorola V3 and it's been working out great.
The only issue that I have is that my phone seems to connect with Google's cell network instead of Verizon's. I've read that there are two types of hotspots, which one am I using? It's pretty odd because even if I am on another network the phone still connects to Google's network. It seems like someone could hack my phone by setting it to a particular hotspot.
Any thoughts or comments would be greatly appreciated. Re: Someone hacking my phone from a hotspot? If you own a Moto V3 (and it's not in your bag), you must have downloaded the latest firmware for it. That's the most common way how somebody could hack your phone remotely.
The thing is, you shouldn't connect with anything other than the regular wifi (your PC/Mac/TV) and with a different router. There shouldn't be any reason why the phone can be hacked through a regular WiFi hotspot. It can only be done with a router that is being used for the "spyware" and by connecting it to the right (malicious) hotspot.
This is a very common problem, however, as some people don't know that it can be a big security risk. If someone who is not close to you (eg your neighbour) could see you're using a public WiFi network and not the normal one of your company, it could mean many security threats.
Thanks for the tips. My phone is not in my bag and I don't see a way to update firmware from the web. My phone is in an office and I can't do anything from home. Should I just turn off the wifi connection until I get back to the office? I'm assuming that's the best solution but I wanted to be sure.
I would recommend you to make a copy of your data from the phone, if it is any sensitive information. Then you should disconnect the hotspot and make a note of all the details. Take a picture of the network information on your phone. And turn off any network connections on your computer if you used to access the internet while connected to that hotspot.
