Is there a free VPN for browsing?

There are a few free VPN services, but they do have some limitations.

We've already covered the basics of a VPN in our Best VPN services roundup, so I'll just list the positives and negatives.

For no monthly fee you can get your hands on: HideMyAss : A very simple service with a straightforward login page. The connection is fast, reliable, easy to set up, and very customizable. They also have good privacy policy that state that they don't keep any logs or sell user data.

The downside is that their service can be a little slow, not to mention it can be quite annoying when connection takes a while to load a page. However, if you're willing to settle with this limitation then HideMyAss is a great free VPN.

For free up to 5GB: Le VPN : Not only is this a good free VPN service, they also have a free mobile VPN app. This free version comes with a 3 GB limit on bandwidth (you can increase it by 50% for free). And they have an interesting policy that allow anonymous users to have unrestricted access to any website they want.

The caveat with this free option is that it has a fairly limited reach. You won't be able to use it to access websites in countries that it's not available in, and they've said in the past that the free users will not receive any special offers from them. Still, Le VPN is a solid free option for anyone who is only looking for a free VPN.

For free through all types of connections: IPVanish : This is the best free VPN service around for a lot of reasons. Their free version is pretty generous, offering unlimited bandwidth and unlimited access to all devices. IPVanish keeps no logs on the data sent, and they even give users the option to hide their IP address. One of the best things about IPVanish is that they have unlimited connections. This makes them a lot more reliable and efficient than most free services, and it allows users to use a lot more devices at once. This also means that IPVanish can handle more concurrent users than many other free VPN services. IPVanish also gives users the chance to try the premium service without paying a dime.

For a low cost, but still worth considering: TurkVPN : This is another good service with a wide reach.

Does Apple have a free VPN?

By Tony Bates

Editor, My Virtual World.

Apple's website says I can use their products "to protect your security while you browse the Internet" so that "data leaves your Wi-Fi network with privacy and security." But does Apple really offer this kind of protection? To find out, we set about investigating its VPN service.

My Virtual World is a tech site for Windows users looking to get away from that Windows mindset that most have experienced at one time or another, and embrace something more exotic, fun, and different. Read my full history in the about page.

Disclaimer: At times this column will be opinionated and biased. It is not sponsored, has not been paid for and has no formal relationship with Apple.

Why do you need a VPN? To be honest, it's a bit of an odd question because there's quite a lot of reasons you might want to use a VPN, and not all of them relate to Apple's VPN. Some people don't trust anything other than their own company, and want protection in that respect. For those people, Apple may be the best option because it works on all their macOS and iOS devices; it runs on Macs, iOS devices and it's free.

But for the mainstream, it's not really an ideal reason to use Apple. The standard reason people use a VPN is to protect themselves from online security issues. You would use a VPN on the basis that, yes, everything you do online and on your devices does leave some sort of digital trace on the Internet. While Apple's products are secure - even if you're running Apple products in some other country or continent - the data that leaves your home Wi-Fi network does, at some level, leave a fingerprint. VPN services can help you get a little bit more security, or help you get more security by giving your true IP a new one. There are plenty of free VPN services too, but it's often difficult to tell which ones work on iPhones, iPads and Macs and which ones don't.

For instance, in November last year, Apple released iOS 11.3, which introduced features like the built-in VPN to block websites like Facebook and Google. When people complained that they couldn't connect to their favourite streaming services via these apps, Apple released iOS 11.

How can I use VPN on my Mac for free?

I currently use a program called TunnelBear to make my computer a VPN server on my home network.

I'd like to be able to use this VPN server on my Mac, but it doesn't work. The program allows me to create an account and create a server, but when I try to connect to it from a Mac I get this message:

Connecting. This connection was not established because the VPN server could not be reached. This may have been caused by a firewall on your computer that is preventing connections to certain ports.

The program works fine on Windows, but I'd like to be able to use the server on my Mac. Is there a way to do this? The answer to this question is simple. Tunnelbear is a Windows program, and in order to connect to a server you have to have a Windows client.
