Which country owns PIA VPN?
The US is the most likely country of origin of that particular VPN.
The company has strong ties to the United States government, and there are good reasons why the United States might be a good fit for this service.
It does, but in addition to the fact that other countries are already using it, we like that this VPN offers the features we like best - all of the following features work on all of the devices we tested, and we found every feature useful: Encrypted data traffic, which means our private data is not intercepted or copied during its passage between our devices. Secure tunnels - all internet traffic to and from our devices goes through encrypted tunnels. There's no way for eavesdroppers to intercept our communications.
A private tunnel from your VPN to the USA server - a lot of people don't have a direct link to a VPN, and may connect their devices to a VPN server in another country instead. That's what happens with Bitdefender Free. The Bitdefender Free app provides a secure tunnel between the VPN server in Russia, for example, and the actual location of your device. It ensures our data gets from point A to point B in as smooth a fashion as possible.
Tunnel setup - Bitdefender Free doesn't require complicated or confusing steps before you can encrypt the data sent over your connection. If you don't want to go through the setup or configuration at all, Bitdefender Free includes a set it and forget it mode.
The Bitdefender Free setup screen. Bitdefender doesn't make any secret of the fact that a VPN connection works by providing privacy from the web to both devices and other online services. And since that's a very good idea, Bitdefender made sure that everything would be set up right away when the user sets up a new device or laptop.
All of the devices we tried Bitdefender Free on were configured without any issue. Once you have set up Bitdefender Free and chosen a location, the app will automatically search for available servers for the first time.
Why is PIA VPN unavailable on Firestick?
Recently, I've been playing around with the Fire TV Stick from Amazon.
I was really impressed with it; it's tiny and powerful, and has so many media-streaming apps already installed. I've been enjoying this little box very much.
However, when I wanted to watch a Netflix movie, I found that my PIA VPN was no longer available on the Fire TV Stick. It's really a shame, since I've been using it for quite a while now and wouldn't mind having that VPN feature. But it just doesn't work anymore. The Firestick won't even detect it, or at least not as a default connection. I have to manually enter the DNS address of the VPN before the Firestick will let me log in.
I can live without that VPN feature, but it does make me feel a bit like a "pirate", and it's really strange that such a feature is suddenly unavailable. It does make sense for Firestick owners that they want to keep their Firestick secure. It makes sense for them to want to keep their Firestick safe, but it doesn't make sense for them to want to keep them secret. Isn't it time that the Firestick makers just made that VPN feature standard?
Can anyone explain what might have caused this change in my Firestick? Note: Just in case there are multiple Firestick owners who are encountering this problem, I'm not sure if I'm describing the problem for all Firesticks. If someone knows that this has been a problem with other Firesticks, please let me know in the comments below. I'd love to help others, as well.
I agree this is odd. I have my VPN on my modem for the same reason (it's also a media center, but I don't use it for that). They had a similar problem when Netflix first came out on iOS.
I'd be curious if they have fixed it since then, or if you can still find it on some devices that do not have it available as an option, but for everyone else, it's probably a temporary situation. It's a pain, but I believe it has to do with the new Apple TV 4K. It's the only thing I know of that doesn't have PIA VPN, even though it does have the same DNS option as the older Apple TVs.
Is there a better VPN than PIA?
I am currently using PIA, and have heard good things about Private Internet Access.
Are they any better than PIA?
You're assuming that a "better" VPN service will be more beneficial than an existing one you're already using. Unless your VPN provider sucks (or perhaps it never existed), then changing is not recommended.
As much as it hurts me to say this, I have heard nothing but the absolute worst about PII wouldn't use them for anything. As to the question of changing my VPN provider.I would do this IF:
) They could offer me more security over what I am currently getting from PI2.) Their service did not suck so badly I wished I had never upgraded.
Private Internet Access has worked out reasonably well for me. The connection is fairly stable but PIA tends to not work correctly when I am doing something like torrenting, so I'm always connected which works just fine for me. On top of this, it's reasonably cheap. The reason I switched was because of their terrible support. Not only were the customer service people incredibly incompetent, but they lied about things such as not working with the most recent version of the company's software. After dealing with them for around 6 months, I finally just gave up on them and moved on. I'm sure it can work for some but not for everyone.
In terms of security, both Private Internet Access and IPVanish support OpenVPN. Both companies are American which I believe in, but in general PIA supports more providers.
PIA is my second choice behind privateinternetaccess (I was on their trial for about a week). I use both PIA and ipvanish for my privacy concerns, though I'd have to say PIA's server is more stable than ipvanish's. Still, ipvanish is the cheapest at 10 bucks a month and has unlimited bandwidth, which is pretty great. I use the vpn to connect to a web site where my girlfriend uses an account through yahoo, so there isn't much to lose if the FBI doesn't find our ip addresses while having an encrypted connection can help us stay hidden.
